If only we had a little more time in the day....

There are so many books about time management and they sit on shelves waiting for us all to find the time to read them.

What I liked so much about this little book is just how easy it is to read and how relevant it was to all levels within our business. I have asked every one of our team to read it.

It would make a difference if everyone even became 10% more efficient in our business, but I reckon I have personally doubled my own productivity when I ruthlessly put this into practice. I re-read my notes quite regularly to help me continually hone these skills and remind myself how focused I must stay.

Time management is skill like any other that, once practiced starts to become habitual. Brian Tracey delivers the information in a fun as well as practical way e.g.

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time!

What has this got to do with Frogs and what I learnt from this book?

Anyone visiting our offices listening to someone discussing eating a really big ugly frog at the start of the day probably wonders what sort of weirdos we are. I 'blame' and 'thank' Brian Tracey for that!!!

Everyone of us gets temped to clear the little jobs out of the way first and put off the big one, the one that is holding us back or creating a bottleneck (the ugly frog). Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are my highest value activities?
  • What can I and only I do that if done well will make a real difference?
  • What is the most valuable use of my time right now?

Then FOCUS like a Laser Beam

Brian gives us many practical strategies to help us really achieve so much more by ruthless prioritising, learning to say 'no', deliberately procrastinating or delegating (the less important / low value jobs) and tackling one job at a time.

He teaches 'Single Handling' - prepare, begin, keep at it without diversion or distraction until the job is 100% complete. Stopping and starting takes tasks on average 500% longer!

This book is one of my favourites and I give top marks. I don't want to steal his thunder by giving away too many of his secrets - it will be worth making the time to read it yourself.
